The Fountain

"Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever--" therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life." (Genesis 3:22-24 - ESV)The movie The Fountain is expected to be release in theaters on October 13th, 2006. This movie seems to be based on the tree of life describe in Genesis 3. The synopsis of The Fountain reads as follows: “An odyssey about one man’s thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves. As a 16th century Conquistador, a modern-day scientist, and a 26th century astronaut, he searches for the secret to eternal life.”
If it is based on the tree of life described in the book of Genesis this movie seems to have an interesting story angle of the tree of life. However, I am usually very disappointed with modern movies anymore but this movie may have some potential. I don’t really know what the tree of life in Genesis is referring to but I have heard some theologians in the Reformed circle make the case that the tree of life is Christ who died on a tree for our justification.
Just another point I like to make about superheroes in the movies. I have been wondering why there is a fascination with superhero characters in resent movies. I have been wondering could it be that we as fallen and dying creatures are instinctively longing for the glorified bodies that we would have had before the fall.
In the trailer for the movie The Fountain the move seems to acknowledge that all have this common problem, DEATH. In other words, we all are going to die! When comes to theological issues of justification, imputation, atonement, and even predestination it bothers me greatly that many of my “Christian” friends seem to have NO interest in these truths. These truths are very important and we need to have clarity on them because from day we are born our bodies are decaying and we will eventually die. Our only hope is in these theological categories of the Christ who lived, died, and lives again for our justification. And for the elect we will have the glorified bodies that we long for because of what Christ did for us.
